The spring season is officially in full swing and that means there are plenty of baseball and softball games to get out and watch. I have gone out to see the Poway and Del Norte baseball teams along with the Poway and Rancho Bernardo softball teams. I will be checking out Rancho Bernardo baseball Wednesday and Del Norte softball on Thursday.

Prep wrestling: Simmons earns first trip to state, spot on Poway High Wall of Fame
By Michael Bower
Poway High heavyweight Kelly Simmons entered the finals of the Masters Meet Saturday night already knowing he had clinched his first trip the CIF State Wrestling Championships.
But there was still one last thing the senior wanted to cement before his prep career comes to an end – a spot on the Poway High Wall of Fame.
Simmons, ranked No. 7 in the state, did just that by pinning No. 11 in the state Escondido’s James Cannon in 2-minutes, 58 seconds to claim the heavyweight Masters Meet title at OtayRanch High School.

Prep girls soccer: Del Norte High routs Our Lady of Peace to advance to semifinals
By Michael Bower
Just about the only thing Kyra Carusa didn’t do in Saturday’s CIF San Diego Section Division III quarterfinal game is convert a penalty kick late in the first half.
But the Del Norte High girls soccer star more than made up for it.
Carusa scored twice and had two assists to lead the always-dangerous Nighthawks offense, as second-seeded Del Norte found the back of the net six times in a 6-1 rout of No. 10 Our Lady of Peace at Del Norte High.

Prep boys soccer: Poway High earns third straight trip to semifinals, ready for Torrey Pines
By Michael Bower
The Poway High boys soccer team wouldn’t want it any other way. A third straight trip to the CIF San Diego Section Division I semifinals and a shot at redemption.
The third-seeded Titans earned a chance to face Palomar League rival and champion Torrey Pines in the SDS Division I semifinals on Tuesday, after defeating No. 6 Chula Vista 2-1 Friday night in the quarterfinals at Poway High.

Prep girls hoop: Kiwanis Tournament
I will be out at the Kiwanis Tournament semifinal game today between Poway High and La Costa Canyon. This should be a good one, as the Titans have not lost a game yet this season and the Mavericks have only lost one. We are finally in the full swing of things for the winter season so make sure to check back here often for some updates on how the local teams are doing.

Prep football: Poway High vs. Vista in SDS D-I title game thoughts
We are about an hour away from kickoff of the San Diego Section Division I championship game between No. 1 Poway and No. 3 Vista here at Qualcomm Stadium. The Titans arrived pretty early for their game tonight and sat in the stands to take in the first half of the Oceanside-Helix game. The kids looked pretty relaxed, most of them were jamming out to their headphones.
A little about the game. I expect to see pretty much the same thing I have seen all year out of the Titans – a dominant defense and a ball-control offense. With running back Evan Gray back in the starting lineup, Poway is pretty untouchable on offense. Gray provides an outside threat while Nehemiah Gross is a great in-between-the-tackle runner. Jimmy Moreno provides that power runner up the middle, too.
If somehow Poway does fall behind, it has quarterback Gabriel Isaak to turn to. The senior has been phenomenal this season. He hasn’t had to win too many games with his arm just because the running game and the defense has been so dominant, but Isaak can certainly do it if needed.
My prediction for this one is a Poway victory, 35-14.

Prep football: Week 11 Previews and Predictions
The last week of the regular season is here and I am juiced to get these playoffs going. Last week I predicted 28-10 Poway over Torrey Pines and it turned out to be 28-9 (Thank you Titans for making me look good). Unlike that other Division I team Eastlake, who went in and lost to Olympian to ruin my perfect week. So I finished 4-1 and am now 54-17-2. Enjoy this week’s previews!
